The WHO Adult BMI Chart
The World Health Organization publishes four principal classifications for adults aged 20 and over. They apply equally to men and women.

What Each Category Actually Means
The category names are unhelpfully blunt, and they get read as health grades when they were designed as statistical bands.
Underweight (below 18.5). This band is discussed far less than the others and deserves more attention. A low BMI is associated with reduced bone mineral density, impaired immune response, fertility effects, and slower recovery from illness or surgery. For many people it simply reflects a naturally light frame with no health consequence at all. The distinction between the two cases is not something BMI can make — it takes dietary history, blood work, and clinical judgement.
Healthy weight (18.5–24.9). This is the band in which population studies show the lowest average all-cause mortality, which is precisely what "healthy" means here. It is a statement about a distribution, not a certificate about your body. Someone at BMI 22 with high visceral fat, poor cardiorespiratory fitness, and low muscle mass is not healthier than someone at 26 who trains regularly — a pattern sometimes labelled "normal weight obesity."
Overweight (25.0–29.9). Population-level risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease begins to rise measurably across this band. It rises gradually, though, and the lower part of this range overlaps heavily with muscular builds. This is where BMI most often misclassifies individuals in both directions.
Obesity (30.0+). Above 30, the associations with metabolic and cardiovascular conditions strengthen considerably and become harder to explain away through body composition alone. Even here BMI remains a screening flag rather than a diagnosis; clinical definitions of obesity increasingly incorporate waist circumference and metabolic markers rather than BMI alone.
Where the Cut-Offs Came From
The boundaries are not arbitrary, but they are rounder than the underlying data. They were set by fitting BMI against large-scale mortality and disease-incidence data and choosing thresholds where risk curves begin to bend upward — then rounding to memorable values. That rounding is why 25.0 and 30.0 are such clean numbers for quantities derived from noisy epidemiology.
Two consequences follow. First, the bands are not cliffs. Crossing from 24.9 to 25.0 changes your label and nothing else; the underlying risk relationship is a smooth curve. If your reading sits within about 0.5 of a boundary, treat it as sitting on the boundary, because measurement error in height and weight alone can move you across it.
Second, the thresholds were derived largely from populations of European descent, and they do not transfer perfectly. Health authorities in several countries apply lower action points — commonly 23.0 for overweight — for people of South Asian, Chinese, and some other Asian backgrounds, where cardiometabolic risk appears at lower BMI values. If that applies to you, read your number against local guidance rather than the global default.
Turning the Range Into a Weight Target
The chart is easier to act on when converted back into kilograms or pounds. Rearranging the formula gives you the weight boundaries for your height:

Notice how wide each range is — roughly 16 to 22 kg. That width is the point. There is no single "ideal weight" for a given height, and any tool that returns one is presenting an average as a target. When the Range Doesn't Apply Cleanly
Four groups need different interpretation, and it is worth knowing whether you are in one.
Children and adolescents (2–19). Adult cut-offs are invalid. BMI-for-age percentile charts, specific to age and sex, are used instead because healthy body composition shifts continuously through growth.
Pregnancy. Weight gain is expected and healthy; BMI during pregnancy does not describe body composition meaningfully. Pre-pregnancy BMI is the figure used for clinical planning.
Older adults. Vertebral compression reduces measured height with age, which inflates BMI, while age-related muscle loss can hide a real decline in lean tissue behind an unchanged number. Some evidence suggests slightly higher BMI is protective in later life.

Reading Your Own Number Sensibly
Three habits make the ranges genuinely useful. Measure under consistent conditions — same time of day, same scale, minimal clothing — because daily fluctuation of one to two kilograms from hydration and food volume will otherwise dominate any real change. Track the trend across months rather than reacting to a single reading. And pair the number with a tape measure: waist circumference captures abdominal fat, which BMI is completely blind to, and it costs nothing to record alongside.
