Minified JSON is built for machines — one long line with every space stripped out — which makes it almost impossible to read when you are trying to understand an API response or track down a wrong value. Pretty printing reverses that: it re-indents the document so nesting becomes visible, each key sits on its own line, and the shape of the data is obvious at a glance. Paste a compact payload from a network tab, a log line, or a curl response and get back a properly formatted document with your choice of indentation. The tool validates while it formats, so if the JSON will not pretty print you get the parse error and its position rather than silence. It is the fastest way to turn an unreadable blob into something you can actually scan, and because everything happens client-side in your browser, you can safely paste responses that include tokens or personal data.
It re-serializes the parsed document with line breaks and indentation, so nesting is visible. The data itself is unchanged — only the whitespace between tokens differs.
No. Keys, values, and ordering are preserved exactly. Only formatting whitespace is added, so the document remains semantically identical.
Two spaces is the most common convention for JSON and matches most style guides. Choose four spaces or tabs if the file needs to match an existing codebase.
The document has a syntax error and cannot be parsed. The most frequent causes are trailing commas, single quotes instead of double quotes, and unquoted keys — the tool reports the position of the first failure.
They are the same operation. "Pretty print", "beautify", and "format" all describe re-indenting JSON so a human can read it.
Use the JSON minifier or JSON to One Line tool to strip the whitespace back out when you need a compact payload for transport or storage.
