Calculate characters-per-minute typing speed from character count, time, and error count.
Estimate how long it will take to type a given number of words at your typing speed.
A dedicated words-per-minute test focused purely on measuring your typing speed accurately.
Measure your typing speed in WPM and CPM with 15-second to 5-minute timed tests and live accuracy tracking.
This WPM calculator lets you work out words-per-minute typing speed manually, without taking a live test - useful when you already have the raw numbers from a typing exam, timed exercise, or another tool and just need the math done correctly. Enter the total words typed, the time taken in minutes, and any errors, and it returns both gross WPM (raw speed) and net WPM (speed adjusted for mistakes), which is the number most typing certifications and job requirements actually ask for. The calculation follows the standard formula used across the typing-test industry, so results are comparable to what a live typing test would report.
Gross WPM is total words divided by time, with no penalty for errors. Net WPM subtracts an error penalty (errors divided by time), giving a more accurate measure of usable typing speed.
Use the standard convention of 5 characters (including spaces) per word if you're counting from raw characters, or your test's reported word count directly.
Net WPM subtracts a penalty for each error, so any mistakes reduce the net figure below your raw typing speed.
This calculator uses the standard net WPM formula many certifications reference, but always confirm the exact formula your specific certification requires.
