BMR vs TDEE: Understanding Your Calorie Baseline
Two acronyms dominate every calorie calculator, and mixing them up is the single most common reason people end up with a daily target that makes no sense. BMR is what your body burns doing nothing at all. TDEE is what it burns doing everything. One is a floor; the other is the number that actually describes your day.

BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate
Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body expends at complete rest, in a thermally neutral environment, in a post-absorptive state — the calories required purely to keep you alive. That means running the heart, inflating the lungs, maintaining body temperature, filtering blood through the kidneys, and powering the brain, which alone accounts for around a fifth of resting energy use.
BMR is not a small residual figure. For most adults it represents roughly 60 to 70 percent of total daily energy expenditure. Even someone who trains hard spends the majority of their daily calories simply existing.
Strictly measured, BMR requires an overnight fast and a period of complete rest under laboratory conditions. What calculators actually estimate — and what most sources loosely call BMR — is close to resting metabolic rate (RMR), measured under less strict conditions. RMR typically runs a few percent higher than true BMR. The distinction matters in a metabolic ward and almost nowhere else.
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
The most widely recommended predictive formula for the general population:
Men: BMR = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) − 161
A 30-year-old man at 70 kg and 175 cm:
(10 × 70) + (6.25 × 175) − (5 × 30) + 5
= 700 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5
= 1,649 kcal/day
A 35-year-old woman at 65 kg and 165 cm:
(10 × 65) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 35) − 161
= 650 + 1,031.25 − 175 − 161
= 1,345 kcal/day
Older resources use the Harris-Benedict equation, revised in 1984; it produces broadly similar numbers but tends to overestimate slightly in modern populations. Katch-McArdle takes a different route entirely, calculating from lean body mass rather than total weight, which makes it more accurate for very lean or very muscular people — provided you have a trustworthy body fat measurement, which most people do not.
TDEE: Total Daily Energy Expenditure
TDEE is the whole picture: every calorie your body spends over 24 hours. It is conventionally broken into four components.
Basal metabolic rate — roughly 60–70% of the total, as above.
Thermic effect of food (TEF) — the energy cost of digesting, absorbing, and storing what you eat, around 10% of intake. Protein is the most expensive macronutrient to process, at roughly 20–30% of its own energy content, compared with about 5–10% for carbohydrate and 0–3% for fat.
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) — walking, standing, fidgeting, carrying shopping, doing chores. This is the most variable component by a wide margin, differing by hundreds of calories per day between two otherwise identical people, and it explains far more of the variation between individuals than deliberate exercise does.
Exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT) — structured training. For most people this is the smallest slice, which is why exercise alone is a weak lever compared with the other three.
The Activity Multiplier
Rather than estimate each component separately, calculators fold NEAT, TEF, and EAT into a single multiplier applied to BMR:

Taking the 30-year-old man above with a BMR of 1,649 kcal:
- Sedentary: 1,649 × 1.2 = 1,979 kcal/day
- Moderate: 1,649 × 1.55 = 2,556 kcal/day
- Very active: 1,649 × 1.9 = 3,133 kcal/day
That is a spread of more than 1,150 kcal per day from a single BMR figure. Choosing the multiplier is a bigger decision than choosing the BMR formula, and it is where most estimation error enters.

Why the Distinction Matters
Confusing the two produces a specific and predictable mistake: someone reads their BMR, treats it as a daily intake target, and sets a deficit below a figure that already excludes every calorie they spend moving. For the man above, eating 1,649 kcal while living a moderately active life is not maintenance — it is a deficit of roughly 900 kcal per day.
The correct mental model is a floor and a total. BMR is the floor: the energy cost of being alive, which does not go away on a rest day. TDEE is the total: what you actually spend, and therefore the approximate figure at which body weight holds steady. Deficits and surpluses are measured against TDEE, never against BMR.
How Accurate Are These Numbers?
Predictive BMR equations typically land within about 10 percent of laboratory-measured values for most adults, which is respectable for arithmetic requiring only four inputs. Individual variation in thyroid function, lean mass, and genetics accounts for the rest.
TDEE stacks a second error source on top. Activity multipliers are wide brackets, and self-assessed activity level is notoriously optimistic — the gap between "moderate" and "light" is around 175 kcal per day for a typical BMR, and most people place themselves a bracket too high. A reasonable approach is to pick the lower of two plausible brackets, hold intake steady for two to three weeks, and adjust based on what the scale actually does. Real-world feedback beats any equation.
Two further caveats. These formulas are validated for adults; children, pregnant and breastfeeding people, and those with thyroid or other metabolic conditions need clinical assessment rather than a calculator. And a calorie figure describes energy, not nutrition — it says nothing about protein adequacy, micronutrients, or fibre.
Where These Numbers Fit Alongside BMI
BMR and TDEE describe energy flow; BMI describes a weight-to-height ratio at a point in time. They answer different questions, and neither substitutes for the other.
